China Chain Management Association: The total number of top 100 supermarket stores in 2024 was 252,000, down 9.8% year on year

The Zhitong Finance App learned that today, based on the results of the 2024 survey on basic industry conditions, the China Chain Management Association (CCFA) announced the “2024 Top 100 Supermarkets in China”. In 2024, the sales scale of the top 100 supermarket companies was about 900 billion yuan, up 0.3% year on year; the total number of stores was 252,000, down 9.8% year on year. There were 42 companies with year-on-year sales growth, and 25 companies increased their stores. There are 14 companies that have increased both sales and number of stores.

As can be seen from the changes in the business conditions of the top 100 supermarket companies in 2024:

1. The sales volume and number of member stores and discount stores are still growing significantly. Walmart (China) achieved sales of 158.8 billion yuan in 2024, continuing to rank first in the top 100 supermarkets. Market Openers, Hotmaxx (Hotmaxx), Yodi, and Allezi have all seen significant increases in sales.

2. Supermarket enterprise store operations have improved. In 2024, the number of top 100 supermarket stores decreased by 2,750, a year-on-year decrease of 9.8%, but through various corrective measures, overall sales increased 0.3% year-on-year. The operating performance of more than 60% of corporate stores has improved. In particular, lower back companies with sales of 3 billion to 10 billion yuan account for the largest share of companies that have improved their operations.

3. The share of online retail sales continues to rise. In 2024, the online sales of the top 100 supermarket enterprises accounted for 16.9% of total sales, and the role of front-end warehouses in increasing online sales gradually became prominent.

4. The sales volume of the top 10 companies accounted for 66.6% of total sales, increasing year by year.
