According to the European Medicines Supervisory Authority, patients taking diet pills like Novo Nordisk's Ozempic and Wegovy are at risk of developing eye diseases that may cause vision loss. The European Medicines Agency's safety committee found that an eye disease called NAION is a “very rare” side effect of cimaglutide, a key ingredient in diabetes and diet pills. The agency said on Friday that 1 in every 10,000 people taking these drugs will be affected, and product labels must now be updated. The Danish Medicines Agency has asked the European Medicines Agency to review two independently conducted studies which found that the risk of eye disease in type 2 diabetics taking Ozempic more than doubled. A Harvard study last year first proposed a link between eye disease and cimaglutide.
