The US Energy Information Administration released a short-term energy forecast. This year and next two years, the US electricity consumption will hit a record high. The EIA expects electricity demand to rise from a record 4,097 billion kilowatt-hours in 2024 to 4205 billion kilowatt-hours in 2025 and 4225 billion kilowatt-hours in 2026, partly due to artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency dedicated data centers, as well as the increased use of electricity by households and businesses for heating and transportation. According to the EIA, the share of natural gas power generation will drop from 42% in 2024 to 40% in 2025 and 2026. The share of coal power generation will remain at 16% in 2025, the same as 2024, and will drop to 15% by 2026.
