The Zhitong Finance App learned that on Wednesday, US rare earth stocks showed strong performance. USA Rare Earth (USAR.US) soared by more than 28%, doubling its stock price in three trading days this week; MP Materials (MP.US) surged 15%. According to CCTV news reports, on April 15, US President Trump signed an executive order to investigate the national security risks of the US relying on imports to process key minerals and their derivatives.

The above executive order covers a range of minerals, including rare earth elements, which have been identified as the “foundation of the defense industry” by the US government. These mineral resources are critical to the manufacture of jet engines, missile guidance systems, advanced computers, and radar, optical, and communication equipment. In addition, uranium, mineral processing forms, and derivatives are also included in the scope of regulation.

The White House said the latest survey may cover all key minerals as defined by the US Geological Survey (USGS). The USGS list of 50 key minerals includes lithium, nickel, zinc, tin, platinum, and a range of more niche metals, but it is still up to US government officials to decide which minerals will eventually be included in policy recommendations.
