The Zhitong Finance App learned that to commemorate the 39th US President Jimmy Carter, the US stock market will be closed on January 9. Carter died at home on December 29 at the age of 100.

US President Joe Biden announced that January 9 will be designated as the National Day of Mourning. President Carter's state funeral will also be held on this day. The ceremony will be held at Washington National Cathedral in Washington, DC.

The New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ will be closed on the same day to pay tribute to President Carter.

NYSE Group President Lynn Martin said in a statement: “The New York Stock Exchange will close the market on National Day of Mourning to remember President Carter's life dedicated to the nation.”

Nasdaq President Tal Cohen also said, “We are mourning the passing of President Carter and will be closing the US market on National Day of Mourning to commemorate his outstanding contributions to the country and the world.”

Jimmy Carter served as President of the United States from 1977 to 1981. In the 1980 re-election campaign, he lost to Ronald Reagan. Carter was a former Navy veteran and later became the 76th Governor of Georgia. Since leaving office, he has earned widespread respect through the establishment of the Carter Center, where he has carried out humanitarian work around the world for more than 40 years.

Closing the US stock market to commemorate a special person or event is extremely rare. The last similar incident was on December 5, 2018, in memory of George H.W. Bush, the 41st President of the United States. Additionally, examples of market closures due to disasters or major events include Hurricane Sandy in 2012 and the “9/11” terrorist attacks in 2001.
