The reporter learned from the Chinese Academy of Sciences on October 17 that the successful pilot test of biomass catalytic conversion technology to ethylene glycol developed by China's research team will help promote green production of ethylene glycol. The technology was jointly developed by Academician Zhang Tao, researcher Zheng Mingyuan, and researcher Wang Aiqin from the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and a team of partner companies. The team pioneered a new route for the one-step catalytic conversion of biomass sugar to ethylene glycol, and made breakthroughs in the fields of low-cost catalyst development and raw material expansion, and obtained more than 40 invention patents for related technologies. In 2022, the team and partner companies built the world's first kiloton biomass catalytic conversion plant to ethylene glycol in Puyang, Henan. Through continuous technical improvements and upgrades, the selectivity of the ethylene glycol product produced by this device is close to 80%, and the separation purity of the product has reached 99.9%. It has now been introduced to the market.
