Most readers would already be aware that Dataproces Group's (CPH:DATA) stock increased significantly by 26% over the past three months. We wonder if and what role the company's financials play in that price change as a company's long-term fundamentals usually dictate market outcomes. Particularly, we will be paying attention to Dataproces Group's ROE today.
Return on equity or ROE is an important factor to be considered by a shareholder because it tells them how effectively their capital is being reinvested. Simply put, it is used to assess the profitability of a company in relation to its equity capital.

The formula for return on equity is:
Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity
So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Dataproces Group is:
14% = kr.3.1m ÷ kr.21m (Based on the trailing twelve months to July 2024).
The 'return' is the profit over the last twelve months. Another way to think of that is that for every DKK1 worth of equity, the company was able to earn DKK0.14 in profit.
Thus far, we have learned that ROE measures how efficiently a company is generating its profits. Depending on how much of these profits the company reinvests or "retains", and how effectively it does so, we are then able to assess a company’s earnings growth potential. Generally speaking, other things being equal, firms with a high return on equity and profit retention, have a higher growth rate than firms that don’t share these attributes.
At first glance, Dataproces Group seems to have a decent ROE. Even when compared to the industry average of 14% the company's ROE looks quite decent. However, while Dataproces Group has a pretty respectable ROE, its five year net income decline rate was 7.5% . Based on this, we feel that there might be other reasons which haven't been discussed so far in this article that could be hampering the company's growth. These include low earnings retention or poor allocation of capital.
However, when we compared Dataproces Group's growth with the industry we found that while the company's earnings have been shrinking, the industry has seen an earnings growth of 3.6% in the same period. This is quite worrisome.
Earnings growth is an important metric to consider when valuing a stock. It’s important for an investor to know whether the market has priced in the company's expected earnings growth (or decline). By doing so, they will have an idea if the stock is headed into clear blue waters or if swampy waters await. Is Dataproces Group fairly valued compared to other companies? These 3 valuation measures might help you decide.
Dataproces Group doesn't pay any regular dividends, meaning that potentially all of its profits are being reinvested in the business, which doesn't explain why the company's earnings have shrunk if it is retaining all of its profits. So there could be some other explanations in that regard. For instance, the company's business may be deteriorating.
On the whole, we do feel that Dataproces Group has some positive attributes. Although, we are disappointed to see a lack of growth in earnings even in spite of a high ROE and and a high reinvestment rate. We believe that there might be some outside factors that could be having a negative impact on the business. While we won't completely dismiss the company, what we would do, is try to ascertain how risky the business is to make a more informed decision around the company. Our risks dashboard would have the 3 risks we have identified for Dataproces Group.
