HealthEquity's (NASDAQ:HQY) investors will be pleased with their decent 52% return over the last five years

When you buy and hold a stock for the long term, you definitely want it to provide a positive return. But more than that, you probably want to see it rise more than the market average. But HealthEquity, Inc. (NASDAQ:HQY) has fallen short of that second goal, with a share price rise of 52% over five years, which is below the market return. Looking at the last year alone, the stock is up 13%.

Now it's worth having a look at the company's fundamentals too, because that will help us determine if the long term shareholder return has matched the performance of the underlying business.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

HealthEquity's earnings per share are down 3.4% per year, despite strong share price performance over five years.

So it's hard to argue that the earnings per share are the best metric to judge the company, as it may not be optimized for profits at this point. Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.

In contrast revenue growth of 15% per year is probably viewed as evidence that HealthEquity is growing, a real positive. It's quite possible that management are prioritizing revenue growth over EPS growth at the moment.

A Different Perspective

HealthEquity shareholders are up 13% for the year. Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. The silver lining is that the gain was actually better than the average annual return of 9% per year over five year. This could indicate that the company is winning over new investors, as it pursues its strategy. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Consider risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 1 warning sign for HealthEquity you should know about.
