When you buy and hold a stock for the long term, you definitely want it to provide a positive return. Furthermore, you'd generally like to see the share price rise faster than the market. Unfortunately for shareholders, while the Tasty Bite Eatables Limited (NSE:TASTYBITE) share price is up 30% in the last five years, that's less than the market return. The last year has been disappointing, with the stock price down 23% in that time.

After a strong gain in the past week, it's worth seeing if longer term returns have been driven by improving fundamentals.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

During five years of share price growth, Tasty Bite Eatables actually saw its EPS drop 12% per year.

This means it's unlikely the market is judging the company based on earnings growth. Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.

The modest 0.02% dividend yield is unlikely to be propping up the share price. In contrast revenue growth of 6.6% per year is probably viewed as evidence that Tasty Bite Eatables is growing, a real positive. In that case, the company may be sacrificing current earnings per share to drive growth.

A Different Perspective

Tasty Bite Eatables shareholders are down 23% for the year (even including dividends), but the market itself is up 41%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 5% per year over half a decade. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
