Trading in an IRA

Why trade in an IRA?

IRAs offer more than just a way to save for retirement—they come with key benefits that may help your investments grow more efficiently:

  • Traditional IRAs may offer upfront tax deductions.
  • Roth IRAs offer tax-free withdrawals in retirement.
  • Interest, dividends, and capital gains grow tax-deferred.
  • IRAs typically provide more investment flexibility than many 401(k) plans.

What can I trade in my IRA?

You can trade U.S. exchange-listed stocks, ETFs, ADRs, and select OTC securities. You can manage the account yourself or use a Webull Managed IRA for automated investing. To learn more about our managed accounts, please click here.

Can I use margin or short sell in an IRA?

No. All Webull IRAs are cash accounts. Margin trading is not permitted.

Can I short securities in my IRA?

No. Short selling is not allowed in IRAs because it requires a margin account, which is not available for IRA accounts at Webull.

Can I trade options in an IRA?

Yes. Options trading up to Level 2 is available, subject to approval. Strategies that require margin, such as spreads, are not allowed in an IRA.
