All About Overnight Trading

What is overnight trading?

Overnight trading offers access to an extended trading session, which operates from 8PM to 4AM EST, Sunday through Thursday. The addition of this overnight session enables trading 24 hours a day, 5 days a week (for select securities).

How does overnight trading work?

Overnight trading executions and quote data are provided by Blue Ocean Alternative Trading System (BOATS). This alternative trading system functions outside of traditional stock exchanges, linking buyers and sellers to facilitate trades. Major price fluctuations, corporate actions, and modifications to internal risk controls can temporarily or permanently affect the securities available for trading.

When does the overnight session start and end?

  • Pre-market: 4AM – 9:30AM EST
  • Regular market: 9:30AM-4PM EST
  • After-hours: 4PM-8PM EST
  • Overnight: 8PM-4AM EST

How does overnight trading affect settlement?

Trades placed during regular trading hours will settle in the same night's overnight trading session. While the trades are considered settled, the funds will not be available for withdrawal until the following morning.

How do I place an overnight trade?

Make sure you read and understand the Extended Hours Trading Disclosure before placing a trade. You can find it at https://www.webull.com/policy. No additional permissions or applications are needed to enable overnight trading on your account.

Note: Overnight trading and Overnight market data are not supported on the iPad HD version of the app.

What rules should I be aware of?

  • Shorting is not available in the overnight session.
  • Only LIMIT orders are available. Market, Stop, Stop Limit and Trailing Stop orders are not available in the overnight session.
  • Fractional orders are not available.
  • Only day orders are supported in the overnight session. Day orders will remain open until the end of the overnight trading session. If un-filled, the order will be automatically cancelled at 4AM EST.
  • Margin usage is not available in the overnight session. If your order’s dollar amount exceeds your Cash Buying Power, the order will be rejected.
  • Selecting overnight hours will ensure your trade is active between 8PM and 4AM EST. Your trade will not be active in the extended or regular trading session (4AM to 8PM)

How is buying power calculated during the overnight session?

Overnight trading buying power varies by account type:

  • Cash Account: Buying power is based on the Available to Withdraw amount. Proceeds from intraday sales cannot be used during the same night's overnight session.
  • Margin Account: Buying power is based on the cash balance (excluding pending deposits). Proceeds from intraday sales can be used during the same night's overnight session.

How do day trading rules apply with overnight trading?

Trades placed in the overnight session between 8PM and 11:59PM are marked with a trade date of T+1. Trades placed in the overnight session between 12AM and 4AM are marked with a trade date of T. For examples, please see below:

BUY 1 XYZ @ 9PM on Tuesday

SELL 1 XYZ @ 10AM on Wednesday

= 1 day trade

Because the buy order was placed between 8PM and 11:59PM in the overnight session, it was marked with a trade date of T+1 (Wednesday). The sell order was placed in the regular trading session, so it is marked with the typical trade date of T (Wednesday). Since both the buy and sell order are marked with a trade date of Wednesday, a day trade is incurred.

BUY 1 XYZ @ 10AM on Wednesday

SELL 1 XYZ @ 10PM on Wednesday

= Not a day trade

The buy order was placed in the regular trading session, so it is marked with a trade date of T (Wednesday). Because the sell order was placed between 8PM and 11:59PM in the overnight session, it was marked with a trade date of T+1 (Thursday). Selling the share in the same day’s overnight trading session does not incur a day trade.

BUY 1 XYZ @ 10PM on Thursday

SELL 1 XYZ @ 11PM on Thursday

= 1 day trade

Because both the buy and sell orders were placed between 8PM and 11:59PM in the overnight session, both are marked with a trade date of T+1 (Friday). Buying and selling the share in the overnight session incurs a day trade.

BUY 1 XYZ @ 2AM on Friday

SELL 1 XYZ @ 3AM on Friday

= 1 day trade

Because both the buy and sell orders were placed between 12AM and 4AM in the overnight session, both are marked with a trade date of T (Friday). Buying and selling the share in the overnight session incurs a day trade.

Why is my account restricted?

If your account is not in good standing, you may be restricted from trading in the overnight session. This is meant to protect your account from further violations as a result of trading with pending/active margin calls. If your Margin Account is marked with a PDT Flag and closes below the $25,000 minimum, your overnight trading access will be restricted—even if an EM Call has not yet been officially issued. Margin Accounts with an active or anticipated EM Call are not permitted to place purchases during the overnight session.

These specific trading restrictions will only apply in the overnight session. However, any new/existing margin calls placed on the account will still apply. More information about margin call restrictions can be found here.

How do I display overnight data?

By default, chart and position data will display the day’s 4PM closing prices. To include data from the overnight session in your chart display, navigate to your trading session settings.

What are the risk considerations?

Participating in extended hours trading comes with specific risks, including those related to liquidity, volatility, trading costs, and more. Please take a moment to review the Extended Hours Trading Disclosure at https://www.webull.com/policy.

What can I trade in the overnight session?

Select stocks and ETFs are available to trade in the overnight session, determined in part by Blue Ocean internal risk controls. Please note, options and bonds are not tradeable in the overnight session.

How can I find what is traded in the overnight session?

An up-to-date list of 24H tradeable securities is available within the Markets tab of our mobile app.

What types of orders can I submit in the overnight session?

In the overnight session, you can submit LIMIT orders for whole-share amounts. You can choose to keep your order active for only one overnight session (day order).

Why did my order not fill?

An order submitted into the overnight session follows the same order-filling procedures that exist in the regular and extended trading sessions. Your order will only be filled if it meets the specified criteria and can be executed according to those conditions.

How will corporate actions affect trading in the overnight session?

A pending corporate action may temporarily halt a security from trading. This is a typical response to ensure the action is processed correctly. Please note, dividends are issued to individuals who have purchased a stock on or before the ex-dividend date. Because transactions made in the overnight session are marked as T+1, purchasing a stock in the overnight session on the ex-dividend date will not entitle you to that stock’s upcoming dividend.
