American Eagle Outfitters: Downgrade To Hold As I Monitor Progress In Opex Leverage
American Eagle Outfitters stock has risen 20% above my target price. The stock is trading at an elevated multiple, and the long-term growth targets set by management are too optimistic. The company's historical performance suggests that achieving a 10% EBIT margin is unlikely. Until AEO shows evidence of operating expense leverage, I am giving it a hold rating.

American Eagle Outfitters' (NYSE:AEO) Performance Is Even Better Than Its Earnings Suggest
American Eagle Outfitters, Inc. (NYSE:AEO) reported healthy earnings but the stock price didn't move much. The accrual ratio from cashflow is a measure of how well a company's profit is backed up by free cash flow. The company had a negative ratio of -0.17 for the year to February 2024. Its profit was reduced by unusual items worth US$156m in the last year. We think American Eagle outfitters' underlying earnings potential is better than its statutory profit. However, we found two warning signs for the company.
