Coherent (COHR) Stock Price Falls As Q1 Earnings Fuel Valuation Debate

Simply Wall St · 2d ago

Coherent just printed Q1 2027 numbers that lit up the income statement while the stock price went the other way. After a sharp 1 day drop of about 13% to roughly $169.76, you are looking at a market that punished the shares right after the company reported record quarterly revenue of $2.37b and basic earnings per share of $1.96. The real story for this photonics player is the powerful profitability trend, with trailing net income and margins far stronger than a year ago, even as traders focused on the rich 34.8x P/E and hit the sell button.

Love the record Coherent earnings but concerned about paying a rich 34.8x P/E for that growth story? Check out our screener of 42 high quality undervalued stocks for companies where profitability and valuation are more closely aligned.

Coherent’s AI Datacenter Bet Clears Early Hurdles

For Coherent, the bullish story depends on turning large AI optics ambitions into concrete programs with customers, not just higher quarterly revenue.

"Bullish analysts expect Coherent to build on its position in AI data centers by scaling PhotonLink, Optical Circuit Switching, and Thermadite platforms on top of its Datacenter & Communications revenue base."

Q1 shows that Datacenter & Communications already accounts for 82% of sales, with PhotonLink, optical circuit switching and system-wide scale all contributing. PhotonLink is tracking toward more than US$100m in the March quarter. Management also points to a US$20b long term agreement and more than 20 engagements, which directly supports the idea that these platforms are moving from concept to contracted demand.

Coherent Capacity Fears Meet Early Utilization Reality

Bearish voices worry Coherent will build fabs for demand that never shows up. The concern is clear in this line.

"Bearish analysts expect Coherent to overbuild capacity in areas like 6 inch indium phosphide and PhotonLink just as AI optical demand or pricing power cools, leaving its expanded footprint underutilized."

Q1 revenue of US$2.37b with Datacenter & Communications at 82% of sales, record bookings, and order coverage through 2027 all point to heavy use of new 6 inch and PhotonLink lines today. The risk is not gone, though. CapEx of US$776m and plans to more than double indium phosphide output by 2027 raise the bar for future utilization.

Hunt For Quiet Dislocations

Coherent just showed how strong reported numbers and a sharp price move can pull in opposite directions. The real opportunity could sit in stocks where that kind of disconnect remains open in current pricing.

  • Company 1 - 44% below our estimate - expands local-payments rails that let large digital platforms collect and disburse cash across harder to reach consumer markets.
  • Company 2 - 46% below our estimate - builds electrical systems and components for hyperscale facilities as long-lead data center projects lock in multi year construction pipelines.
  • Company 3 - 23% below our estimate - scales production and access for new incretin-based treatments as chronic metabolic conditions push payers and clinicians toward higher efficacy therapies.
