According to government data released on Friday, real wages in Japan increased 2.2% year on year in September, achieving the ninth consecutive month of increase. This provides strong support for the Bank of Japan to continue to raise interest rates. Real wage growth was faster than 1.6% after the August correction. The average nominal wage increased 4.6% to 311,409 yen. This is the fastest growth rate since January 1997, up from 3.9% after the August correction. The basic wage for workers increased by 3.7%, which is roughly the same as the 3.8% increase in August. An official from Japan's Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare pointed out that the steady rise in basic wages since this year has been a key factor in improving actual wages. The growth rate of overtime pay in September was 3.6%, down from 4.9% after the August correction.
