Eagle Materials: 3 Key Takeaways for Long-Term Investors

The Motley Fool · 1d ago

Key Points

  • Second-quarter revenue reached a record $653 million.

  • Cement price increases of $10 to $15 per ton take effect January 2027.

  • Eagle Materials repurchased $62 million of shares during the second quarter.

On its second quarter of fiscal 2027 earnings call, held on Nov. 4, 2026, Eagle Materials (NYSE:EXP) reported record quarterly revenue of $653 million. Heavy investments in plant modernizations aim to expand margins once capital spending drops. Three things management said stand out.

1. Plant Modernizations Will Lower Spending and Boost Cash Flow

Upgrading the Mountain Cement plant in Laramie, Wyoming, replaces equipment from the 1960s. Completing this project marks the peak of capital expenditures, which are investments in physical assets, before free cash flow expands.

Once we finish the construction at Laramie, we'll see a significant step-down in capital expenditures for fiscal year 2028, resulting in increased free cash flow.

2. Cement Price Increases Offset Rising Transportation Costs

Elevated diesel fuel prices pushed up freight expenses across every product line during the quarter. Management is responding by raising cement prices early next year to protect profitability.

I think Michael mentioned, we do have price increases in most of our cement markets that have been announced for early January. Those are anywhere between $10 to $14, $15 a ton depending upon the market.
-- D. Craig Kesler, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

3. Aggregates Acquisitions Present Growth Opportunities

The market for aggregates, which are crushed stone, sand, and gravel, remains fragmented across the country. Management is actively pursuing mergers and acquisitions (M&A) that fit its low-cost operating model.

On the M&A front, we remain active exploring opportunities within our core businesses, and the pipeline for deals remains robust, especially in aggregates.

Looking Ahead

Public infrastructure projects and data center construction are driving cement demand, giving management tailwinds despite high mortgage rates weighing on residential housing. Eagle Materials relies on its long-term raw material reserves and low-cost footprint to manage cost swings while keeping an eye on freight rates and pricing discipline.

Even with the continuing resolution between federal infrastructure bills and a higher public scrutiny of data centers, our customers believe the tailwinds for cement and aggregates will remain as we enter calendar year 2027.
-- Michael Haack, President and Chief Executive Officer

Disciplined capital investments during market troughs set up the company to capture higher margins whenever demand rebounds.

When we come out of the current trough, Eagle will be a stronger, better positioned and more profitable company than we were in prior cycles.
-- Michael Haack, President and Chief Executive Officer
