04:51 AM EST, 11/05/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Finland's UPM-Kymmene (UPM.HE) and South Africa-headquartered Sappi (SAP.JO) submitted proposed remedies to address the European Commission's competition concerns about the companies' planned graphic paper joint venture, according to a Thursday release. The companies committed to optimizing the supply of certain paper grades in Europe and related disclosures to keep the market "competitive and stable" despite falling demand, while accounting for environmental performance. They also agreed to create certain commercial safeguards for customers and investments in decarbonization, electrification and energy efficiency, among other proposals. In April, the commission opened an in-depth investigation into the deal over concerns that it would reduce competition for certain communication papers, specifically in the markets for magazine paper and coated woodfree paper in the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland. It is expected to make a final decision by year-end or shortly thereafter.
