McDonald's stock jumped 6.6% in regular trading to about US$280 after its Q3 2026 update, a strong move for a mature global chain. The immediate spark was earnings per share of about US$3.51 on revenue of roughly US$7.2b. Those numbers reinforced the market’s confidence in the business model rather than signaling a surprise reinvention.
Short term traders are reacting to the print and the price action. Longer term investors are weighing those same figures against a rich P/E, steady multi year earnings growth and a reliable dividend to judge whether this fast food giant still earns its premium.
Like the resilience of McDonald's earnings but wary of paying up for a mature giant on a rich P/E? Filter for large caps that pair durable cash generation with more modest pricing power using the 34 high quality undervalued stocks.
Earnings tell part of McDonald's story, but investors who care about what they are paying for the business often focus more on the cash that actually comes in the door. Based on McDonald's cash flows alone, the stock could be a notable 26% overvalued.
Optimists argue that McDonald’s can turn AI and automation into a long term profit engine rather than just a cost tweak.
"I'm also projecting that this company will be one of the best to take AI into its operations, expanding margins and reducing reinvestment and operation expenses, resulting in a higher operating margin, Return On Invested Capital (ROIC) and Sales/Capital ratio."
Q3 adjusted operating margin reached roughly 50%, helped by refranchising gains and tight SG&A, which lines up with that efficiency ambition. NEXT related pilots, including ArchIQ ordering and digital offers, are already live and contributed to an 11% constant currency EPS lift, even while global comps rose only 1.5%.
Skeptics worry that even if McDonald’s boosts efficiency, slower demand growth and changing eating habits could blunt the payoff.
"However, the weakness of the economy and consumer spending will put pressure in revenue growth during the next couple of years, coupling with the fact that a more health aware customer (resulting, or not, from new obesity drugs) will probably opt for other choices."
Q3 numbers echo that concern. Revenue was roughly flat at 1.1% growth and below consensus. U.S. same store sales fell 0.2%, the first drop since early 2025, even as value bundles and specialty beverages supported checks. Menu changes for lighter, protein focused items are still in early stages and have not yet shifted reported sales trends.
