DIS Stock Layoffs: What to Know as Disney Plans More Layoffs

Barchart · 1d ago

Disney (DIS) shares are in focus on Tuesday after reports indicated that the entertainment giant is preparing another round of layoffs as part of a broader cost-cutting initiative. Disney is considering cutting several thousand jobs while asking some managers to identify annual cost savings of up to 20%. This would mark one of the largest restructuring efforts since CEO Josh D'Amaro took over earlier this year.

At the time of writing, Disney stock is hovering around the same price at which it started 2026.

What We Know About Disney’s Upcoming Layoffs

Disney hasn’t publicly disclosed the number of positions that could ultimately be affected, but it’s reportedly targeting meaningful cost savings via layoffs and other spending cuts.

The initiative comes as Disney navigates several industry challenges, including intense streaming competition, evolving consumer viewing habits, rising adoption of artificial intelligence (AI), and softer results in some traditional media businesses.

Importantly, the savings are not expected to be purely defensive. Reports indicate that CEO Josh D'Amaro intends to redirect a portion of the savings toward growth priorities such as film and TV content, tech investments, theme parks, and the cruise line business.

All in all, these initiatives would streamline costs and preserve capital for areas with stronger long-term returns, potentially unlocking meaningful upside in DIS shares over time.

What Could Drive DIS Shares Higher in the Near Term?

For Disney shares, a near-term catalyst could be the company’s fiscal Q4 earnings set to be released before the market opens on Nov. 17.

Consensus is for the mass media behemoth to post $1.67 in earnings per share (EPS) for its fourth financial quarter, which would represent about 50% growth year-over-year.

Note that DIS also pays a healthy dividend yield of 1.32% as of this writing, which makes it even more appealing for income-focused investors.

And at about 2x sales, the company is currently trading at a discount to its historical averages.

Wall Street’s Consensus View on Disney

Wall Street analysts remain bullish on DIS stock heading into 2027.

The consensus rating on Disney remains at “Strong Buy,” with the mean price objective of about $128 indicating potential upside of about 13% from current levels.
