HPQ’s long-term underperformance over the past year can be traced back to its not-so-lucrative fundamentals. Analysts and investors are cautious of the stock as the demand for its products is forecasted to shrink, and its sales figures are expected to remain flat over the course of the next 12 months. Moreover, the company’s sales declined by 1.2% annually over the last five years, showcasing some end-market challenges for its products and services. Finally, HPQ’s incremental sales over the last two years showed lower profitability, with its EPS remaining flat.

For the current year, which ended in October, analysts expect HPQ’s EPS to rise 3.5% to $3.23 on a diluted basis. The company surpassed the consensus estimate in each of the last four quarters, which is impressive.

Among the 16 analysts covering HPQ stock, the consensus is a “Hold.” That’s based on one “Strong Buy” rating, 10 “Holds,” one “Moderate Sell,” and four “Strong Sells.”

The configuration has grown bearish over the past month, with the stock now having one Strong Buy rating, down from two a month prior.

On Nov. 3, Goldman Sachs analyst Katherine Murphy maintained a “Sell” rating for HPQ stock and lowered its price target from $22 to $21.

HPQ’s mean price target of $28 is below the current market price. Its Street-high target of $35 implies a robust 23.8% upside from current levels.
