Those following along with Truist Financial Corporation (NYSE:TFC) will no doubt be intrigued by the recent purchase of shares by Michael Lyons, President of the company, who spent a stonking US$1.2m on stock at an average price of US$48.36. That increased their holding by a full 119%, which arguably implies the sort of confidence required for a shy sweet-natured nerd to ask the most popular kid in the school to go out on a date.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Truist Financial

Notably, that recent purchase by Michael Lyons is the biggest insider purchase of Truist Financial shares that we've seen in the last year. So it's clear an insider wanted to buy, at around the current price, which is US$49.41. That means they have been optimistic about the company in the past, though they may have changed their mind. We do always like to see insider buying, but it is worth noting if those purchases were made at well below today's share price, as the discount to value may have narrowed with the rising price. In this case we're pleased to report that the insider bought shares at close to current prices. Michael Lyons was the only individual insider to buy during the last year.

Over the last year we saw more insider selling of Truist Financial shares, than buying. The chart below shows insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year. Insider Ownership

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Truist Financial insiders own about US$105m worth of shares (which is 0.2% of the company). I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.

So What Do The Truist Financial Insider Transactions Indicate?

The recent insider purchase is heartening. However, the longer term transactions are not so encouraging. The high levels of insider ownership, and the recent buying by an insider suggests they are well aligned and optimistic.
