Wafer foundry UMC has received a large number of photonic integrated circuit orders from Silicon Optoelectronics invested by Zhongji Optoelectronics and Tencent. The total number of initial orders may be as high as 10,000 wafers. It is expected that these chips will be manufactured at UMC's Singapore plant, and additional orders may be placed in the future. According to reports, the price of these products is seven times that of traditional CMOS processes, which is expected to increase UMC's profitability.
