What Groupon Investors Missed Before The Fall

Simply Wall St · 2d ago

If you had decided on 30 October 2025 to back Groupon on the strength of its AI story and North America momentum pitch, the outcome felt very different a year later. For Groupon shareholders, the loss over the past year was 26.9%, including dividends. With that result now on the table, which assumptions and early warning signs from the bull and bear cases would you want to interrogate first?

On Simply Wall St, a Narrative is an investor's thesis written down: the reasoning, plus the numbers it rests on. Run those numbers and you get an estimated Fair Value.

Groupon has already moved. See which of 33 high quality undervalued stocks still trade below our estimates.

The Two Groupon Stories Investors Were Weighing

The shares cost US$19.62 at the start of the period, and anyone looking at Groupon then had to choose between two sharply different stories about where the business might head next.

On the optimistic side, the bull Narrative put Fair Value at US$38.33, based on assumptions that Groupon could pair 13.7% revenue growth with a 13.2% profit margin, supported by AI driven traffic and stronger North America momentum.

The bear Narrative pointed to a Fair Value of US$16, anchored in worries that rising privacy regulation and aging technology could weaken user engagement, as well as Groupon's position against larger digital platforms.

What The Results Changed For Groupon

The clearest test of the Groupon bull story came from the Q2 2026 filing. Revenue slipped from US$125.7m to US$124.7m, and a US$20.3m profit in Q2 2025 turned into a US$1.7m loss, taking net margin from 16.2% to a loss of 1.4%. That record challenged the optimistic profitability assumptions and lent more weight to the cautious case.

The lesson here is simple. When a thesis leans on margin expansion, you track net margin first, then check whether new AI or cost plans ever show up as sustained profitability.

What You Would Be Paying For In Groupon Today

Groupon trades at US$15.75, while the selected bullish Narrative’s Fair Value sits above the current price based on its own modelling and assumptions rather than any proven outcome.

The Narrative leans on Project Foundry, Mobile Next and trust and quality work to reset purchase frequency and merchant engagement. A buyer now would need to believe these programs can stabilise North America Local and support healthier repeat activity for the recent fall to look like an opening rather than a warning.

"Project Foundry is intended to rebuild Groupon around AI, with management reporting that engineering output per developer has already more than doubled and that AI is now building and optimizing tens of thousands of hyperlocal campaigns, which could support higher revenue productivity and improved net margins as the model scales."
