What Box Holders Got Right

Simply Wall St · 1d ago

Box spent this year talking less about file storage and more about AI agents handling contracts, legal records, and bank documents. Holding Box from the start of the year would have returned 50.7%, including dividends. If you had been deciding on 1 January 2026 whether to buy, you had to judge those AI ambitions and partnerships before Q1 beats and raised guidance hit the wires, and ask whether this business could really earn its way into that kind of rerating.

A Narrative on Simply Wall St is one investor's written case for a company, with its growth, margin and multiple assumptions spelled out. Those assumptions imply an estimated Fair Value.

This theme extends beyond Box. See which of 39 AI small caps may still merit a closer look.

The Two Stories Box Investors Had To Weigh Up

The shares cost US$29.91 at the start of the period, and anyone looking at Box then had to decide which future looked more plausible.

On the optimistic side, the bullish narrative put fair value at US$37.50, which is 25% above the start price. It was based on Box AI and Enterprise Advanced contributing to revenue growth of 10.3% a year and a future P/E assumption of 37.7x within a three-year window.

The bearish view argued for fair value of US$24, which is 20% below the start price. That perspective focused on hyperscaler pressure and vendor consolidation, with Box assumed to grow revenue 7.8% a year while profit margins moved toward 4.0% and the business relied heavily on existing customers.

What The Results Changed For The Box AI Story

Box Automate launching and Enterprise Advanced driving Q2 2027 revenue of US$321.1 million and net income of US$13.1 million gave the optimistic case fresh support on product adoption and profitability. The cautious script still mattered because net margin only reached 4.1%, well short of the bullish 12.7% assumption. Overall, the evidence cut both ways.

The whole decision hinged on whether Box could turn AI workflows into higher quality earnings. For a different stock with an AI pitch, track suite adoption, bookings and the reported net margin against whatever uplift the original thesis assumes.

What Box’s Run Up 51% Already Prices In

Box now trades at US$43.45, comfortably above where the year began and above where this Narrative’s Fair Value sits. The current view leans on AI driven workflows and Enterprise Advanced to keep revenue healthy, even if profitability inches forward more slowly.

For that to hold, you would be assuming Box can sustain strong net retention and expansion, while heavier AI usage and security needs do not erode the earnings quality behind that price.

"Although Box is seeing accelerating demand for AI driven workflows around unstructured content, the push into token intensive Box AI usage is already weighing on gross margin guidance toward about 80.5%. Heavier adoption of these features could restrain future gross margin improvement and limit the contribution of AI to net earnings growth."

How Could You Get There Earlier?

You may be late to this rally, but that does not have to mean arriving late to every opportunity. Start with companies whose prices leave room for a different view of their future. Here are three trading below our estimates.

  • Company 1 - 48% below our estimate - converts a near record backlog of mega-projects into cash while containing disputes.
  • Company 2 - 38% below our estimate - tightens carrier vetting and uses AI tools to cut fraud and claims costs.
  • Company 3 - 23% below our estimate - scales higher margin composite mat rentals as utilities projects require more temporary access.

That is three of the list. See the full list of 33 companies trading below our fair value estimates →
