WEC Energy Group (WEC) Stock Q3 Earnings Meet A Bigger Data Center Bet

Simply Wall St · 16h ago

WEC Energy Group came into this Q3 2026 report with the stock already grinding higher, up over 15% in the past month and adding another 1.3% today to close at US$116.12. The utility is widely treated as a steady, regulated earner, yet the headline this quarter is anything but sleepy. Earnings per share reached about US$1.19 for the period and management tightened full year guidance, while the share price reaction looks modest next to a far more aggressive long term capital plan now tied to data center demand.

WEC Energy data center story meets early tests

The bullish pitch is that WEC Energy Group can turn hyperscale interest and its tariff design into durable earnings power.

"Further build out of data center capacity for customers such as Microsoft and Vantage or Oracle, including the 3.9 GW of forecast load and the potential 4 GW to 5 GW on existing sites, is set to increase electricity sales and support earnings growth as new projects enter rate base."

Q3 gives some proof points. Weather normalized retail electric sales rose 4.1% helped by Very Large Customers. EPS climbed to US$1.18 and 2026 guidance nudged higher. Management also enlarged the 2027 to 2031 capital plan to US$47.5b tied largely to data center demand.

Rate, funding and project risks still in play

On the flip side, the same growth engines bring the execution and financing worries that skeptics focus on.

"The capital investment plan at WEC Energy Group continues to grow, with a record US$37.5b program from 2026 to 2030 and an expectation of about US$1.1b of common equity issuance in 2026, along with a 50% equity content target for any incremental capital."

The updated outlook now calls for US$47.5b of capex over 2027 to 2031 plus US$5b to US$5.5b of common equity, so the funding burden is increasing. Illinois draft ROE of 9.48% and a 50% equity layer also highlights that regulators are scrutinising returns even as the stock has climbed about 15% in 30 days.

Hunt Quiet Dislocations Now

WEC Energy Group linked a larger capital plan to data center demand, and the share price already reacted. The real opportunity is spotting companies that could be undervalued before the market closes that gap.

  • Company 1 - 35% below our estimate - sells high end GPU racks hyperscalers rely on as AI workloads raise data center power needs.
  • Company 2 - 38% below our estimate - scales a device trade in and refurbishment network as policy backed recycling incentives reshape how younger consumers upgrade electronics.
  • Company 3 - 20% below our estimate - grows a money platform as more customers hold balances, earn shared interest and route payments through integrated bank partners.
