What happened?

Shares of freight and logistics provider Covenant Logistics (NASDAQ:CVLG) jumped 10.5% in the afternoon session after the company reported third-quarter financial results showing higher revenue and its first sequential and year-over-year increase in adjusted diluted earnings per share since the second quarter of 2022.

According to a company press release, Covenant Logistics reported that total revenue rose 19.2% to $353.9 million from $296.9 million in the previous-year period, driven by performance in managed freight. The company also reported diluted earnings per share of 40 cents and adjusted diluted earnings per share of 50 cents. Both revenue and adjusted earnings per share were above Wall Street analysts' consensus estimates of $332.9 million and 43 cents, respectively. Operating margin was 3.5%, in line with the same quarter last year.

By the end of the third quarter, approximately 80% of fleet assets operated under long-term contracts. The release also said that higher Managed Freight revenue and operating income countered disruption and costs from Truckload repositioning.

What is the market telling us

Covenant Logistics’s shares are somewhat volatile and have had 12 moves greater than 5% over the last year. But moves this big are rare even for Covenant Logistics and indicate this news significantly impacted the market’s perception of the business.

The biggest move we wrote about over the last year was 3 months ago when the stock dropped 13% on the news that the company reported mixed second-quarter results where revenue beat expectations but earnings fell short. The logistics firm posted revenue of $332.9 million, edging past the consensus estimate of $330.3 million. However, its adjusted diluted earnings of $0.42 per share were slightly below the $0.43 analyst forecast and down from $0.45 in the same quarter last year.

The decline in year-over-year profitability, coupled with a drop in operating margin to 2.7% from 3.8% a year ago, appeared to concern investors more than the slight revenue outperformance, leading to the stock's decline.

Covenant Logistics is up 42.4% since the beginning of the year, but at $31.76 per share, it is still trading 36.3% below its 52-week high of $49.88 from July 2026. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Covenant Logistics’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $2,231.
