Elon Musk Reveals Neuralink Implants That Could Restore Sight and Enable Communication Through Thoughts, Mom Maye Highlights This ‘Amazing’ Achievement

Elon Musk highlighted two Neuralink brain implants that aim to restore vision and enable thought-based communication, while his mother, Maye Musk, celebrated a demonstration in which an ALS patient used the technology to order coffee.

Musk Says Blindsight Awaits Regulatory Approval

"Our second product is called Blindsight and it will, as the name suggests, enable even those who are completely blind or have never seen to see," Musk wrote on X. "It is ready from an engineering standpoint. Just waiting on regulatory approval."

Neuralink’s Blindsight technology aims to bypass damaged eyes and optic nerves by transmitting camera-generated visual information directly to the brain’s visual cortex.

The FDA granted Blindsight Breakthrough Device Designation in September 2024, accelerating regulatory review without authorizing commercial use. The implant remains investigational, and Neuralink has not demonstrated restored vision in human patients.

Telepathy Targets Communication Through Human Thoughts

Musk also highlighted Neuralink’s first product, Telepathy, which enables people with paralysis to control computers through neural signals.

"It enables high-speed communication with computers or humans simply by thinking," he wrote. "Output bandwidth will vastly exceed the fastest human speech or typing in a few years. Read that sentence again."

Neuralink’s PRIME study began human implantation in January 2024, demonstrating cursor control and other digital interactions.

Musk previously called Neuralink’s ambitions "Jesus-level miracles", although his faster-than-speech prediction remains unproven.

Maye Musk Celebrates ALS Patient’s Achievement

"So amazing. @neuralink," Maye Musk wrote on X, responding to footage of an ALS patient reportedly ordering coffee through Neuralink’s Bloom application.

The video shows the patient using brain-generated text and synthesized speech to order coffee, illustrating how assistive technology could support everyday independence.

The demonstration follows another ALS patient’s experience, in which Neuralink helped Terry Mandable communicate with his wife using reconstructed speech.

Musk has also outlined plans for increasingly capable implants, while Neuralink continues clinical testing.

Maye’s reaction concerned the patient’s communication demonstration, not Blindsight. Neither implant has FDA authorization for commercial use, and clinical results do not establish universal effectiveness.
