$10,000 invested in Macquarie shares 12 months ago is now worth…

The Macquarie Group Ltd (ASX: MQG) share price has been a strong performer for shareholders in the past 12 months, significantly beating the S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO).

As the chart below shows, the Macquarie share price has risen by 15% while the ASX 200 has only gone up by 1%.

Past performance isn't a reliable indicator of future returns, and I don't expect a 15% return in the next 12 months. However, recent performance has been impressive.

Let's take a look at what would have happened to an investment from a year ago.

Pleasing return

If someone invested $10,000 in Macquarie shares a year ago, that person would be noticeably wealthier.

A return of 15% over the past year means the ASX financial share investment is now worth $11,500.

The market usually focuses on the company's latest market-sensitive update. So let's remind ourselves what Macquarie said and why the market has pushed the Macquarie share price higher.

In July, the business held its annual general meeting (AGM) and provided an update on FY27's first quarter.

It noted at the AGM how each division performed.

Macquarie Capital, the investment bank, saw its net profit rise year-over-year, driven by investment-related and brokerage income.

The commodities and global markets (CGM) net profit contribution was "substantially up" year-over-year, driven by increased income from commodities compared to subdued conditions in the prior corresponding period and increased asset finance income due to higher activity.

The Macquarie Asset Management (MAM) net profit contribution was down year-over-year after divesting its North American and European public investments business in the second half of FY26.

Finally, the banking and financial services (BFS) division's net profit was up year-over-year, driven by volume growth in the loan portfolio and deposits, partly offset by lower margins with changes in the portfolio mix and competition across lending and deposit growth.

BFS deposits grew 4% quarter-over-quarter to A$223.3 billion and the home loan portfolio grew 6% quarter-over-quarter to A$191.5 billion. This is faster growth than the growth that Commonwealth Bank of Australia (ASX: CBA), Westpac Banking Corp (ASX: WBC), National Australia Bank Ltd (ASX: NAB) and ANZ Group Holdings Ltd (ASX: ANZ) are achieving.

What could the Macquarie share price do in the next 12 months?

According to CMC Markets, there have been five broker ratings issued on the ASX financial share within the last three months. Three of those analyst ratings were a buy, and two were a hold.

A price target is where analysts think the share price will be a year from the time of the investment call.

The average price target of those five targets is $273.40, suggesting the Macquarie share price could rise by another 8% within the next year. That could be an appealing return. I think the ongoing strength of the BFS growth is compelling.
