A St. Louis jury has rejected the lawsuit of three women who previously claimed Bayer's Roundup herbicide caused them cancer. This ruling has strengthened Bayer's efforts to control the costs of tens of thousands of similar lawsuits in the US, and the company has now proposed a settlement plan. The unanimous ruling reached on Thursday is the first successful case since the US Supreme Court handed down a ruling in June this year. The Supreme Court ruling actually blocked a lawsuit based on “Bayer's failure to add a carcinogenic warning to the Roundup label.” However, in the St. Louis case, the plaintiff's attorney made a different claim, alleging that Roundup had design flaws, was an unreasonably dangerous product, and should not have been put on sale. Bayer argued that the plaintiff could not prove that Roundup should have been banned, and cited the US Environmental Protection Agency's safety assessment of the herbicide as a basis. Before the trial, Bayer said that in the past 25 lawsuits involving Roundup, the company has won 17 favorable rulings, but there are still about 65,000 cases pending.
