Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, was hit by suspected hacking, causing it to freeze more than $2.5 billion in assets and triggering a sharp drop in the price of digital tokens. Binance said it has yet to confirm that customer funds have been affected in any way. A Binance spokesperson said, “We are aware of reports of potential security issues and are currently actively investigating them. At this stage, we have not confirmed that user funds have been affected. Our security team is urgently reviewing all relevant information, and as soon as we have verified information, we will post an update through the official Binance channel.” Despite this, Binance said it has now frozen $2.54 billion in assets, and this amount is likely to increase further as its team works closely with law enforcement, issuers, blockchain intelligence firms, and industry partners. Binance co-founder Changpeng Zhao said that the exchange may have been hacked, but he expects all user funds to be paid in full. Zhao Changpeng is currently no longer responsible for the company's day-to-day operations, but he is still the company's largest shareholder. Various online forums are full of estimates of the amount of losses and speculations about attack methods, but none of them have been confirmed. Blockchain tracking platform Arkham has identified wallets linked to suspected hackers, which hold around $5.9 billion in digital assets, but this figure does not necessarily represent the total amount of funds stolen from Binance. Affected by this incident, the price of Bitcoin once plummeted by 3.7%, falling below $79,000, the lowest level since September, and other coins were sold off. US stocks also closed down, and the Nasdaq 100 Tech Index fell nearly 1.4%.
