Hitachi (TSE:6501) Stock Price Meets A Q2 Earnings Valuation Reckoning

Simply Wall St · 2d ago

Hitachi shares came into today under pressure, with the stock down over 12% in the past week and about 7% over the past month. That is a sharp reset for a company that just posted Q2 FY2027 basic earnings per share of ¥50.99 on revenue of ¥2,904.4b and a trailing net margin of 6.5%.

Traders are reacting to recent valuation strain, including a P/E of 30.5x versus much lower peer multiples. Long term investors are weighing that against earnings forecasts that point to faster growth, as well as a discounted cash flow value that still sits above the current price.

Hitachi bullish story: backlog and digital mix on trial

Supporters argue Hitachi’s Energy and digital push can carry earnings higher as large projects convert and AI services scale.

"Persistent, robust demand for power grid upgrades and renewable energy integration, notably in Europe and North America, is driving substantial growth in Hitachi's Energy sector, and continued investment in electrification and grid modernization is expected to support revenue and margin expansion in upcoming years."

Q2 showed that thesis working. Energy orders were very strong, H1 Energy revenue rose 32%, and adjusted EBITDA guidance for the segment increased by ¥33b. Group revenue climbed 15% Y/Y with record Q2 levels, and management raised full year targets and cash conversion, which backs the idea that the backlog is turning into higher profit.

Hitachi bear case: capex strain and execution risk tested

Skeptics focus on whether heavy Energy capex and complex projects could erode returns even with growth in place.

"Large ongoing capital expenditures for manufacturing capacity expansion in areas such as power grids and U.S. production sites are now being lifted further by more than ¥170b of additional spending and by a broader multi year global capacity build in Hitachi Energy."

Recent results partially validate that concern. Management highlighted big grid investments in Canada and the U.S., plus broader capacity builds, while also flagging project risk after a ¥9b DSS cost overrun. Free cash flow guidance improved and ROIC was raised, yet the share price has fallen about 13% over 7 days, which suggests the market is uneasy about the balance between growth spending and execution risk.

Hunt For Pricing Disconnects
