Trustmark: 2 Key Takeaways for Long-Term Investors

The Motley Fool · 3d ago

Key Points

  • Trustmark sold 34 branch properties to fund investment portfolio repositioning.

  • The approved loan pipeline reached $1 billion in the third quarter.

  • Deposits excluding brokered deposits grew $184.3 million during the quarter.

On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 28, 2026, Trustmark (NASDAQ:TRMK) offered more details on a strategic sale-leaseback transaction and investment portfolio restructuring that repositioned $629.5 million of lower-yielding securities to boost future net interest income. Long-term shareholders care because this transaction unlocks capital from physical branch real estate to increase net interest margin, which measures the spread between interest earned on assets and interest paid on deposits.

Two things management said stand out.

1. Portfolio Restructuring Boosts Future Interest Income

Management completed a sale-leaseback of 34 branch properties for a $61.5 million pre-tax gain and reinvested $628 million from low-yielding securities into higher-yielding assets. The shift replaces older 1.4% yields with roughly 5% yields, expanding future profitability without adding credit risk.

Together, these transactions allowed us to unlock capital embedded in our branch network and redeploy it through restructuring of our investment portfolio to further strengthen our balance sheet.

2. Organic Deposits Provide Low-Cost Funding Advantage

Core deposits increased $184.3 million linked quarter, allowing the bank to reduce wholesale brokered deposits (funds raised through third-party brokers rather than local retail branches) to 1.3% of total deposits while maintaining a low quarterly deposit cost of 1.67%.

Importantly, this deposit franchise has been built organically over decades through long standing customer relationships and the work of our associates. We believe that provides us with a durable funding advantage in this competitive market.

Looking Ahead

Net interest margin momentum is accelerating into the final quarter as higher asset yields take effect, and management is not hiding its satisfaction about the underlying trajectory. The bank benefits from rapid loan repricing, with 59% of loans adjusting within three months, alongside disciplined expense control and organic expansion.

We do expect to be at the high end of our guide range with the Q4 NIM around 4%.

Capital allocation remains anchored in fundamental organic expansion across regional markets while management evaluates strategic mergers and acquisitions to build operating scale.

As previously communicated, we will maintain a disciplined approach to capital deployment favoring organic loan growth potential market expansion, M&A and other general corporate purposes as market conditions warrant.
