Simply Good Foods (SMPL) Stock Faces Q4 Earnings Turnaround Doubts

Simply Wall St · 4d ago

Simply Good Foods stock slipped 3.4% to about $9.75 on Wednesday, giving the impression of another ho-hum day in packaged snacks. The fresh Q4 2026 report tells a sharper story. Revenue came in at $333.3m while basic earnings per share rebounded to $0.34 after two loss-making quarters, indicating progress on the turnaround plan that has been outlined to investors.

Short-term traders are reacting to the sales decline. Longer-horizon holders are weighing a business that is still unprofitable over the past year against a plan that targets higher margins and a return to healthier earnings power.

Simply Good Foods: Turnaround Targets Meet Mixed Progress

The bullish story hangs on Simply Good Foods fixing its brands while lifting profitability, not just riding category growth.

"The main thing that has to go right is management successfully restoring margins through pricing, productivity, and lower promotion, while addressing Atkins and OWYN after impairments, distribution losses, and product quality issues."

Q4 points to early movement on that margin plan. Gross margin held close to last year at 34.0% while net income swung from a loss to a US$30.5m profit and EPS returned to US$0.34. Brand repair looks more uneven. Quest salty snacks grew consumption, yet overall retail takeaway fell 8.4% and Atkins volumes declined over 20%, showing execution progress is only partial so far.

Simply Good Foods Bear Case Finds Fresh Support

The bearish view argues that Simply Good Foods will keep lagging its category because brand fixes and cost work do not translate into healthier economics fast enough.

"Despite company wide pricing, productivity initiatives and a major fixed cost reduction that includes a roughly 15% workforce cut and lower Q3 FY26 G&A, the revised FY26 outlook for a 7 to 6% net sales decline to US$1.345 to 1.355 billion and a 21 to 19% decline in adjusted EBITDA to US$220 to 225 million, together with gross margin falling to around 32.5%, points to a scenario where operating leverage and net margins remain structurally weaker than assumed."

Q4 and fresh FY27 guidance largely reinforce that fear. Net sales fell 9.7% in Q4 and management now guides another 13% to 17% decline for FY27, with adjusted EBITDA projected to fall 9% to 14%, even as gross margin is expected to recover by roughly 250 to 300 basis points. That mix, consisting of weaker volume and earnings while unit economics improve, suggests the margin rebuild is not yet fixing the operating leverage problem the bear case highlights.

Hunt For Mispriced Earnings Power

Simply Good Foods shows how complex a turnaround can appear as it unfolds. The real opportunity may be in stocks where improving fundamentals are not yet fully reflected in valuations.
