SMID-Cap Moat Companies Shine In March

The 2024 market rally continued in March, with the S&P 500 gaining over 3% during the month and finishing the quarter up over 10%. The Morningstar Wide Moat Focus Index had a strong month, gaining 3.59%. Mid-caps posted stronger returns than large-caps in March. Only two of the Magnificent 7 outperformed the market.

MOAT: Downgrade On Valuations

VanEck Morningstar Wide Moat ETF has outperformed the S&P 500 by almost 300% since inception. The fund invests in companies with strong competitive advantages trading below Morningstar's estimate of fair value. At 25.6x P/E, MOAT's current portfolio valuation is quite high and I am hesitant to recommend it as a buy. In August, I wrote about the prescient performance of the MOAT ETF in avoiding Apple and Tesla.
