McCarthy Thanks Trump for His Help

The Wall Street Journal · 01/07/2023 03:02

Newly elected Speaker Kevin McCarthy credited former President Donald Trump for helping him get the House's top job in a press conference in the wee hours of the morning Saturday, and said he was "a thousand percent" confident his speakership would last a full two-year term.

"I do want to especially thank President Trump," Mr. McCarthy said. "I don't think anyone should doubt his influence. He was with me from the beginning. ... He would call me and he would call me and he really was, I was just talking tonight, helping to get those final votes."

After the press conference, Mr. McCarthy walked to the speaker's office, trailed by reporters and cameras.

When he spotted a new sign over the door with his name on it, he exclaimed in delight: "Oh yes!"

As dozens of media members snapped photos, Mr. McCarthy asked someone to take a picture on his own phone.

"Sweet! See that?" he said. "It was worth the wait."

As he finally entered the office, loud cheers and applause broke out from his staff waiting for him inside.
