McCarthy Says He'll Use 'Power of the Purse and the Power of the Subpoena'

The Wall Street Journal · 01/07/2023 01:41

By Eliza Collins

Kevin McCarthy (R., Calif.), in his first speech as speaker, outlined how he wanted the 118th Congress to operate.

He first addressed Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D., N.Y.) and his historic post. Mr. Jeffries is the first Black person to lead a major political party.

"If he can rise to lead his party then opportunity and democracy still thrive in America," Mr. McCarthy said. "There will be times we agree, many times we will differ. I promise our debates will be passionate."

"Now the hard work begins," he said before outlining the agenda Republicans ran on in the November midterm elections, including fighting inflation, increasing U.S. energy production and increasing border policy.

"It's time for us to be a check and provide some balance to the president's policies," he said. "We will use the power of the purse and the power of the subpoena to get the job done."

He added, "I hope one thing is clear after this week: I never give up."
