Rep. Crane Votes Present, Helping McCarthy

The Wall Street Journal · 01/07/2023 00:09

GOP Rep. Elijah Crane of Arizona, another Kevin McCarthy holdout, just voted present.

Mr. Crane, Rep. Andy Biggs and Rep. Lauren Boebert of Colorado all voted present. This could help Mr. McCarthy take the speakership if votes the rest of the way remain as they did in the last go around.

Because the House has 434 current members, a majority is 218. But if three members vote present the new threshold to be speaker is 216, which Mr. McCarthy had previously.
