Rep. Gaetz Votes 'Present'

The Wall Street Journal · 01/06/2023 23:09

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R., Fla.) voted 'present' in the fourteenth bid for speaker of the House.

Mr. Gaetz's vote means Rep. Kevin McCarthy will fall short of the speakership. Mr. McCarthy walked over and began talking to Mr. Gaetz directly.

GOP Rep. Lauren Boebert of Colorado also voted present. The two lawmakers have been fierce critics of Mr. McCarthy.

Voting present allows the number of votes Mr. McCarthy needs to win to be brought down.
