Rep. Rosendale Votes Against McCarthy, All Eyes on Rep. Gaetz

The Wall Street Journal · 01/06/2023 22:58

By Eliza Collins

Rep. Matt Rosendale of Montana voted against Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R., Calif.), and instead backed Rep. Andy Biggs of Arizona for speaker.

Mr. Rosendale is the fourth "no" vote and Mr. McCarthy cannot lose any more votes.

The only remaining detractor who has not voted is Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida, who is being lobbied hard on the floor by Mr. McCarthy's allies.

Mr. Gaetz has long been a McCarthy critic and was widely seen as unwinnable. However, in the last several hours he has spoken positively about Mr. McCarthy's concessions.
