China's Yunnan to extend power curbs on aluminium producers - sources

- Aluminium producers in China's Yunnan province will continue operating with 10% less power, with sign of when restrictions implemented this week will be lifted, officials at two producers told Reuters on Wednesday.

Producers of electrolytic aluminium in the southwestern province were asked by the local grid to cut power usage by up to 10% from Sept. 10 to Sept. 14, reducing their output by around the same amount.

Yunnan, which relies heavily on hydropower for its electricity supply, has seen lower rainfall than usual this summer.

An official at Yunnan Power Grid declined to comment on whether restrictions on power consumption would continue.

However he told Reuters that "measures have been taken to improve the situation" of reduced hydropower generation owing to lower than usual rainfall.

Yunnan, with an annual operating capacity of 5.25 million tonnes of electrolytic aluminium, accounts for around 10% of China's capacity.
