Hamburg Regulator Bars Facebook From Collecting WhatsApp Data for German Users

05/11/2021 11:44

03:30 PM EDT, 05/11/2021 (MT Newswires) -- Facebook (FB) has been told by a Hamburg, Germany, regulator to stop collecting WhatsApp users' data in the country, according to media reports Tuesday citing a statement from Johannes Caspar, who heads the privacy authority.

Caspar called the latest change to the terms of use for the messaging and calling service authorizing expanded sharing of user data between WhatsApp and its parent Facebook illegal and invalid, as well as "intransparent, inconsistent and overly broad."

The regulator imposed a three-month emergency ban barring Facebook from gathering the data.

Facebook-owned WhatsApp said in an emailed response to the media outlets that it believes the regulator's claims are "wrong," and that the agency misunderstands the purpose and effect of the new service terms, saying its order will not affect the new terms' rollout.
