One of the bestselling video games of 2020 is “Animal Crossing: New Horizons” from Nintendo Co, Ltd. (OTC:NTDOY), and Democratic presidential hopeful Joe Biden and his campaign team are paying attention.
What Happened: The Verge reports the Biden-Harris campaign has launched four official Biden signs in “Animal Crossing” for supporters through the Nintendo Switch Online shop.
Gamers can deck out their homes with one of four signs: the Biden-Harris logo, the Team Joe logo, the Joe Pride logo and an image of Biden’s aviator sunglasses in red, white and blue.
Why It’s Important: The inclusion of campaign signs in “Animal Crossing” is a big win for the video game market.
“It is an exciting new opportunity for our campaign to engage and connect Biden-Harris supporters as they build and decorate their islands,” Christian Tom, director of digital partnerships for the Biden campaign, told The Verge.
“As we enter the final campaign stretch towards November, this is one way we are finding new creative and innovative ways to meet voters where they are and bring our supporters together.”
In February, eMarketer forecast that political spending would hit $6.89 billion for the 2019-2020 season, an increase of 63.3% from the 2015-2016 election season.
Digital made up $1.34 billion of that estimate, up 203% from the comparative period.
Nintendo reported a strong fiscal first quarter that led the stock to new 52-week highs. “Animal Crossing: New Horizons” sold 10.63 million copies in the fiscal first quarter and has sold more than 22 million copies in the first half of calendar 2020.
NTDOY Price Action: Nintendo shares were up 4.65% at $70.50 at the close Tuesday.
