04:56 AM EST, 12/03/2025 (MT Newswires) -- The European Council and Parliament agreed to a full ban on natural gas imports from Russia by 2027 as part of efforts to bolster the European Union's energy security and independence. The provisional agreement includes a gradual implementation of the ban, with short-term supply contracts set to be phased out from April 25, 2026, for liquefied natural gas and June 17, 2026, for pipeline gas, the council said Wednesday. Imports of LNG under long-term contracts will be banned from Jan. 1, 2027, while those for pipeline gas will be prohibited from Sept. 30, 2027, until Nov. 1, 2027, at the latest.
