A Closer Look At Ollamani's Earnings

As finance nerds would already know, the accrual ratio from cashflow is a key measure for assessing how well a company's free cash flow (FCF) matches its profit. To get the accrual ratio we first subtract FCF from profit for a period, and then divide that number by the average operating assets for the period. This ratio tells us how much of a company's profit is not backed by free cashflow.

As a result, a negative accrual ratio is a positive for the company, and a positive accrual ratio is a negative. While it's not a problem to have a positive accrual ratio, indicating a certain level of non-cash profits, a high accrual ratio is arguably a bad thing, because it indicates paper profits are not matched by cash flow. Notably, there is some academic evidence that suggests that a high accrual ratio is a bad sign for near-term profits, generally speaking.

For the year to June 2025, Ollamani had an accrual ratio of 0.22. Unfortunately, that means its free cash flow fell significantly short of its reported profits. In the last twelve months it actually had negative free cash flow, with an outflow of Mex$1.8b despite its profit of Mex$89.1m, mentioned above. Unfortunately, we don't have data on Ollamani's free cash flow for the prior year; that's not necessarily a bad thing, though we do generally prefer to be able to see a bit of a company's history. Having said that, there is more to the story. We can see that unusual items have impacted its statutory profit, and therefore the accrual ratio.

How Do Unusual Items Influence Profit?

The fact that the company had unusual items boosting profit by Mex$341m, in the last year, probably goes some way to explain why its accrual ratio was so weak. We can't deny that higher profits generally leave us optimistic, but we'd prefer it if the profit were to be sustainable. When we crunched the numbers on thousands of publicly listed companies, we found that a boost from unusual items in a given year is often not repeated the next year. And that's as you'd expect, given these boosts are described as 'unusual'. We can see that Ollamani's positive unusual items were quite significant relative to its profit in the year to June 2025. All else being equal, this would likely have the effect of making the statutory profit a poor guide to underlying earnings power.

Our Take On Ollamani's Profit Performance

Summing up, Ollamani received a nice boost to profit from unusual items, but could not match its paper profit with free cash flow. Considering all this we'd argue Ollamani's profits probably give an overly generous impression of its sustainable level of profitability.
