Freelancer Insiders May Regret Not Buying More, Market Cap Hits AU$104m

Freelancer Limited (ASX:FLN) insiders who bought shares over the past year were rewarded handsomely last week. The stock rose 15%, resulting in a AU$14m rise in the company's market capitalisation, translating to a gain of 25% on their initial investment. Put another way, the original AU$530.2k acquisition is now worth AU$663.3k.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Freelancer Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by Founder Robert Barrie for AU$140k worth of shares, at about AU$0.20 per share. Even though the purchase was made at a significantly lower price than the recent price (AU$0.23), we still think insider buying is a positive. Because the shares were purchased at a lower price, this particular buy doesn't tell us much about how insiders feel about the current share price.

Robert Barrie bought a total of 2.88m shares over the year at an average price of AU$0.18. You can see the insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year depicted in the chart below. Insider Ownership

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. Freelancer insiders own about AU$87m worth of shares (which is 84% of the company). I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.

What Might The Insider Transactions At Freelancer Tell Us?

It is good to see the recent insider purchase. And the longer term insider transactions also give us confidence. But we don't feel the same about the fact the company is making losses. Once you factor in the high insider ownership, it certainly seems like insiders are positive about Freelancer. Nice! So while it's helpful to know what insiders are doing in terms of buying or selling, it's also helpful to know the risks that a particular company is facing. For example - Freelancer has 1 warning sign we think you should be aware of.

For the purposes of this article, insiders are those individuals who report their transactions to the relevant regulatory body. We currently account for open market transactions and private dispositions of direct interests only, but not derivative transactions or indirect interests.
