China Steel Association: China's imports of 481,000 tons of steel fell 7.9% month-on-month in May

The Zhitong Finance App learned that on June 9, the China Iron and Steel Industry Association issued an article stating that, according to customs statistics, in May 2025, China imported 481,000 tons of steel, a decrease of 41,000 tons, a decrease of 7.9% over the previous month; the average price was 1749.9 US dollars/ton, up 59.9 US dollars/ton from month to month, an increase of 3.5%. In January-May, 2.553 million tons of steel were imported, a year-on-year decrease of 490,000 tons, a decrease of 16.1%.

In May 2025, China imported 98.131 million tons of iron ore, a decrease of 5.007 million tons and a decrease of 4.9%; the average price was 96.2 US dollars/ton, a decrease of 1.9 US dollars/ton, or 1.9%. In January-May, a total of 486.409 million tons of iron ore were imported, a year-on-year decrease of 26.572 million tons, a decrease of 5.2%.

In May 2025, China exported 10.578 million tons of steel, an increase of 116,000 tons over the previous month, or 1.1%; the average price was 697.9 US dollars/ton, up 3.5 US dollars/ton, or 0.5%. From January to May, exports of steel totaled 484.69 million tons, an increase of 9.958 million tons over the previous year, or 8.9%.
