Despite the closure of the Pokrovsk coking coal mine in eastern Ukraine, the country's steel production continued to grow in the first four months of 2025, according to data released by the Union of Ukrainian Steel Producers on Friday. Ukrainian steelmaker Metinvest has suspended the operation of Ukraine's only coking coal mine on the grounds that the security situation continues to deteriorate as the Russian military advances. Data show that from January to April this year, the country's crude steel production increased by 1%, from 2.4 million tons in the same period in 2024 to 2.43 million tons. Ukrainian steel production has been affected since the Russia-Ukraine conflict began, and the country reported a 70.7% drop in 2022 to 6.3 million tons. It was reduced to 6 million tons in 2023, but increased to 7.58 million tons in 2024.
