The Zhitong Finance App learned that, according to reports, British Airways parent company IAG is about to finalize orders for about 30 Boeing (BA.US) 787 Dreamliners. The deal will mark a major victory for Boeing after the US and UK reach a new trade agreement.

The potential deal could include additional purchase options, which will boost Boeing's performance as the American aerospace manufacturer is vying with Airbus for a contract for a wide-body aircraft. GE Aerospace (GE.US) is expected to supply engines for these aircraft, a source said.

US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick hinted at the deal when announcing the trade agreement, saying that a British airline is preparing to buy a Boeing aircraft worth $10 billion. This figure is in line with the size of the IAG deal.

After the news broke, Boeing's stock price once surged 5% on Thursday.

According to reports, IAG is already Boeing's largest customer in the UK, and the company is completing a broader assessment covering Boeing and Airbus's wide-body aircraft options. Although Boeing is expected to win most of the orders, Airbus is still likely to get some.

The deal comes at a critical moment for Boeing. Boeing is facing pressure from ongoing trade disputes and has suspended deliveries to major markets such as China. While trade negotiations are pending, the EU has also proposed retaliatory tariffs on US aircraft.

Lutnick confirmed that UK-made aircraft components, including Rolls-Royce engines, will be excluded from the new tariffs, which is a positive development for the transatlantic aviation supply chain.

The aviation industry is urging US officials to keep duty-free treatment for aircraft and parts, which is critical for global manufacturers to survive in an increasingly fragmented trade environment.
