Since the Air Force base closed, Brooks has continued to grow as a focal point of San Antonio’s southside. The San Antonio Business Journal reports the Brooks Development Authority, along with developer NRP Group, broke ground on a $78 million apartment project called The Artana.

The Artana and a retail center will be on the northwest side of the Loop 410 and Interstate 37 interchange. The average rents are expected to be around $1,600.

Alta Architects is the design firm attached. Delivery is expected by the end of 2026.

Brooks is a 1,308-acre community where more than 1,700 people live and 5,300 people work. Brooks was created in 2001 by the United States Congress, the State of Texas and the City of San Antonio to redevelop the former Brooks Air Force Base.

The NRP Group has developed 27,000 affordable and 9,000 mixed-income apartment homes (60% of total production), totaling 60,000 units with a value of over $11 billion.
