On April 15, local time, European Commission President von der Leyen spoke with Singapore's Prime Minister Huang Xuncai. Von der Leyen said that Singapore is a like-minded partner of the European Union, from supporting Ukraine to the two sides working together on climate security and sustainable development. She stressed that this partnership is growing as a bilateral digital trade agreement is about to be signed. Von der Leyen reiterated the importance of predictability, transparency, fairness, and openness in the global trading system — the only way for the system to function properly, thrive, and benefit everyone. In this context, von der Leyen explored the possibility of strengthening cooperation between the EU and the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement. Earlier, she had her first talks on the subject with New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon last week. Von der Leyen expressed the EU's intention to strengthen dialogue and cooperation with Singapore in the field of security and defense. She also encouraged formal negotiations on cooperation between Singapore and the world's largest research and innovation project “Horizon Europe.”
