The Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council held a press conference on March 12. The following is a partial transcript. China Central Radio and Television Reporter Guoguang: Some public opinion has noticed that the content relating to Taiwan in the 2024 and 2025 “Report on the Work of the Government” only emphasizes “unswervingly advancing the great cause of reunification of the motherland” and does not mention “peaceful reunification.” May the spokesperson ask if this means that the mainland's position has changed? Taiwan Affairs Office spokesman Chen Binhua: “Peaceful reunification, one country, two systems” is our basic policy for resolving the Taiwan issue. It is the best way to reunify the motherland, and is most beneficial to our compatriots on both sides of the Strait and the Chinese nation. With regard to resolving the Taiwan issue, we are willing to seek the prospects for peaceful reunification with the utmost sincerity and effort. If “Taiwan independence” separatist forces provoke and persecute, or even challenge the bottom line and break through the red line, we will have to take decisive measures.
